sequana’s name
The residency takes its name from Sequana, the Latin name of the Celtic goddess associated with the River Seine in ancient Gaul. Revered by the Celtic communities who lived along the river, Sequana was honored as a maternal, life-giving force closely tied to water’s powers of healing and renewal. At her sacred sanctuary near the river’s source, close to present-day Dijon, people traveled to leave offerings of all kinds—small sculptures, coins, personal objects—in exchange for health, protection, and spiritual restoration.
Both the Celts and later the Romans understood water as a vital source of life, purification, and balance, and Sequana embodied these beliefs. Though centuries have passed, her presence endures—carried in the river itself, the surrounding landscape, and the stories that continue to flow through the land.
